How do Emerging Technologies Affect Journalism?

New technologies such as social media impact every aspect of our lives, and this is especially so for journalists and the news. Social media is now used by many journalists and television news reporters to add depth to a story. You are now just as likely to see a post or video in the news as a quote from someone in person. For example, with the recent focus on police brutality, many of the protested situations, such as Eric Garner were posted about on social media. Social media has also impacted exposure, with many non-newspaper journalistic websites popping up only on the internet, journalists have more opportunities now than ever. News websites like Yahoo, even satirical examples like The Onion have popped up through social media, and even televised or newspaper networks have websites and twitter accounts (New York Times, Daily News etc.)

Tips on Creating a Good Podcast

Creating a good podcast could be difficult, but not so much when you have a simple set of techniques down, anyone can do a good one. When interviewing, be sure to avoid yes or no questions. Additionally, try to expand upon a question when given an answer (using an answer to ask another question.) A really important technical aspect of podcasts is editing. Edit out pauses (ums and ahs) and pointless questions or blank space. When using the microphone, try to keep it a closed fist's distance away from the person's mouth for good quality.

Twitter as a Tool

Twitter is an extremely useful tool for journalists all around the world. Journalists can use people's twitter profiles to get firsthand accounts of events to use in their stories. They can also use this to scoop a new story, which is a sought after goal for many journalists. In addition to twitter itself, there are many additional websites that a journalist could use that go through twitter. http://trendsmap.com/
can be used by journalists to map trends and what people are tweeting about all over the world. http://topsy.com/ could be used by journalists to gather additional information for a story to scoop it, or for more firsthand accounts, and even more aspects of the event that weren't previously known about.

Year Review Luke McNamara

This semester in Mrs. Turner's class, we covered three topics: podcasts, twitter and blogs. I thought twitter was interesting. I didn't realize how useful of a tool twitter is for journalists, especially those wanting to scoop a story. However, at some points twitter got a little boring. I also enjoyed podcasts I thought it was fun to interview people about different topics. However, the long time spent editing and the glitches and complications of GarageBand made this project a little less enjoyable. I also thought blogging was fun. I liked experimenting with the different gadgets and  customizing my blog. However, sometimes it felt a little pointless because of the outdatedness of blogs and the move towards social media.
